The Don Imus racial scandal is one of the topics at the next Diversity Town Hall.
The theme of the next MPA Diversity Town Hall slated for June 19
is “Race, Identity & Privilege in Media,” and will feature a panel
of media experts discussing how a deficiency in diverse representation
in the workforce can lead to inaccurate racial and ethnic stereotypes
printed in the pages of a magazine, broadcast on the air, or posted on
the Internet. The recent Don Imus racial insult scandal will be among
the “hot topics” addressed at this Town Hall.
Said Shaunice Hawkins, MPA VP of Diversity and Multicultural
Initiatives, “We hope this frank discussion will help magazine
organizations better understand racial, ethnic and cultural
multiplicities. That kind of understanding leads to a more respectful
workplace as well as a consumer base whose own diverse values are
appreciated.”
The “Race Identity & Privilege in Media” Town Hall will be held
at The Harmonie Club (4 E. 60th Street) in New York City, 5:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m. on June 19. The event is open to MPA members and nonmembers.
