LEARNING CIRCLE SERIES 2009: Communicating to Advance Racial Justice

Description: The Praxis Project Learning Circles are interactive gatherings that engage experiential learning, popular education, and dialogue to support advocacy and organizing for health justice. Praxis will offer a residential session — Communication for Racial Justice — where participants will receive support from experienced organizers, develop action plans to support their work, forge networks, and build skills—all on an historic 45-acre campus.

Communicating to Advance Racial Justice, January 23-25
: Affirmative action, public school funding, immigration rights and most certainly the presidential campaign — virtually every major political battle underway today banter race close to the surface. Race and more precisely racism, is where the contest for the "dominant frame" is most intense and where, when we don't pay close attention, we often lose the battle. This session, taking place just days after the Inauguration in Washington, DC, will focus on strategic communications to effectively advance racial justice. Participants will gain tools to design strategy and develop communications plans that are grounded in their local context and take into account the post-election environment. Lead trainers: Makani Themba-Nixon, The Praxis Project and Malkia Cyril, Center for Media Justice

Costs & Scholarships:The Praxis Project is fortunate to have funding that subsidizes much of the curriculum development, staffing and logistical support for its residential trainings. However, this funding does not cover all expenses. We are able to offer each 3-day residential training at a cost of $500 per participant or $800 per 2-person team (due at time of acceptance). Scholarships (include registration, lodging and travel) are available to a select number of participants who can demonstrate financial need. We strongly encourage team participation from each applying organization. Please submit a separate registration form for each applicant.

Deadline to Apply:November 7, 2008. Complete this application form as soon as possible. Submit it to signup@thepraxisproject.org no later than November 1, 2008. Applicants will be notified of their application status beginning on November 17,2008.
